Field Trips

Field Trips
Field trips and outdoor education are core pillars of Northland Arboretum’s mission to make nature accessible and exciting to all age groups—from Pre-K to adult. We offer a range of hands-on experiential education opportunities and arboretum tours to teach kids the basics of biology, animal behavior, and tree identification.
Our outdoor, hands-on learning experiences are 90 minutes long and help public, private, and homeschool students connect with the natural landscape on a more personal level—and learn a thing or two along the way. Our field trips are suitable for grade levels 3-5.
Group size: 35 students max (15 minimum)
Age requirements: grades 3-5
Pricing: $6.00 per student
Class Options
All our experiential learning opportunities include a guided arboretum tour, an optional picnic lunch (with indoor spaces available if necessary), and a 90-minute, hands-on lesson. Our courses cover a wide variety of topics—from birds to underwater creatures.
Lichens
Lichens are tiny algae that grow on rocks, trees, and the ground. In this experiential education course, students will observe lichen growing around the Arboretum using magnifying glasses and field guides to try to identify it. Students will also learn how lichens are classified into three growth forms: crustose (looks like spray paint), foliose (leafy), and fruticose (branching, bushy, shrubby).
Water, Water Everywhere
This class focuses on watersheds. Through an EnviroScape demonstration, kids will see how human behavior affects the natural flow of water. Afterwards, students will have an opportunity to design their own water filtration systems to help keep our lakes and rivers clean.
Water Critters - Macroinvertebrates
In this outdoor education course, students explore the Whiskey Creek in search of various aquatic bugs and critters. Time and weather permitting, they will help net the critters from the creek. Using an identification chart, kids will identify their catch and use that information to draw conclusions about the health of the water.
Birds of a Feather
This hands-on experiential learning course focuses on US bird migrations. Students will play a game that explores how and why birds migrate and the challenges they face along the way. During the game, students will take on the role of a bird moving from station to station, rolling dice to see what good and bad experiences they encounter. This outdoor education course wraps up with Bird ID Bingo.
Dichotomous Tree Identification Scavenger Hunt
In this outdoor education course, students take a hike on our trails and identify different trees, including quaking aspen, paper birch, balsam fir, red pine, jack pine, red maple & red oaks. Students begin by examining the leaves of the tree, then use pictures in their guidebook to decide if the tree is coniferous or deciduous. Students learn the different types of branching as well as the distinction between deciduous and coniferous trees.
Who Shares the Woods with You? Scat and Tracks
Who doesn’t love to track animals, like the mighty hunter of old? On this course, students use identification charts and impression models to match animal tracks and scat to the animals that created them. After taking photos of the tracks, students will write a creative story about which animals met and what they did to make their tracks. The class wraps up with a hike looking for tracks and scat (weather permitting).
Field Trip Rules and Guidelines
During field trips at Northland, members of our staff take students out into nature for hands-on, experiential learning and arboretum tours. To keep everyone safe, we ask that all field trips be constantly supervised by an adult—especially during guided arboretum tours. We also require that all students wear closed-toed shoes. Field trip organizers are responsible for the safety of their students.
