Book Summary:

Join us for an evening of meaningful conversation as we discuss Kingbird Highway by renowned birder and author Kenn Kaufman.

At sixteen, Kaufman dropped out of high school and set off on an extraordinary journey, hitchhiking across North America in pursuit of birds. Traveling from Alaska to Florida and Maine to Mexico, he followed reports of rare species, picked fruit and worked odd jobs when money ran low, and lived on as little as possible while attempting to set a record for the most North American bird species seen in a single year.

What begins as a fast-paced competition gradually becomes something deeper. Kaufman realizes that in his rush to find the next bird, he has been looking without truly seeing. His record-setting adventure evolves into a quest for a greater understanding of birds, wild places, and the natural world.

Part adventure story, part coming-of-age memoir, Kingbird Highway combines a lyrical celebration of nature with unpredictable, and sometimes dangerous, experiences on the road.,  Whether you are an experienced birder, a nature enthusiast, or simply enjoy a remarkable true story, this month’s selection offers plenty to reflect on and discuss.

This event is free to attend and is a wonderful opportunity to connect with others in our community who enjoy nature, literature, and engaging conversation.
